The backstory....
Back in 2019 Jo (now named Joey) was the sole Director of an Ofsted Outstanding Registered Childcare business. This was the product of a proud 12 year long slog of hard work, with many ups and downs.
Married with 2 children, their life looked secure and blissful from the outside to most.
There was something missing. Something felt wrong, something which Jo had not been able to put their finger on for a number of years.
In 2018, Jo went on a solo trip to the beautiful island of Kos and had a week of lazing on the beach reading affirmation based books. The one which hit home the most was 'The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck' by Mark Manson. This is the book which would change Joey’s life forever.
Jo took a leap of faith, believing in their own ability to do anything that they turned their hand to. Later that year she signed up to the UWCB White Collar boxing in her hometown of Brighton, this became a very important ingredient in the recipe which propelled her towards the events that would occur over Christmas 2019.
Jo decided to leave her husband, whom she had been with for 8 years, and explore her queer core which had been laying dormant for what seemed like an eternity.
Very early in 2020, when the world descended into lock down and Covid19 was upon us, Jo decided that they were more fluid in their gender and came out as being Trans. They changed their name to Joey and the roller-coaster began. Their life became filled with DJ'ing, partying and more. Unfortunately the ups and downs of DJ life and the difficult intricacies of LGBTQ+ relationships with both themselves, their friends and their partners meant that they took a rapid decline into severe mental health issues and drug abuse.
We can now fast forward to the part where things become interesting.
Joey, still searching and discovering, took the plunge and decided to apply to go back to University to study music. Billy Mausueth was their business tutor, and along with Tim Nolan and Joe Newman, taught raw production and musical theory. All heroes in the local music scene, Joey learnt a lot here. The Waterbear College of Music was a lifeline. Joey played for Toolroom Records, was an intern for Brighton Music Conference and fully immersed themselves in the music culture.
Life threw some intense situations, they left Waterbear and Joey had to regroup and start again. Their life was fuelled by self medication, lots of late nights and bad decisions. During this time Joey built and led on multiple musically infused projects including Music Pawn, Disco Bits, Min:animal and Level7 Festival. This sounds exciting but underneath it all Joey was about to break, something had to change.
Over the Christmas of 2025 Joey witnessed an incident which showed them first hand what self abuse can do to the body, this sent them on a serious self reflection process. Something needed to change and this was the catalyst that they needed for what came next.
This situation led Joey to take the decision from January 1st 2026 to detox, give up alcohol and to cease self medicating through recreational and prescription drugs. This was by no means going to be an easy task, being submerged in the local music scene meant that most of their friendships had been forged at after hours parties and kitchen discos of the years gone by.
Joey is now on the pathway for a diagnosis of AuDHD and has collected a full house of diagnoses over the last few years, all of which are based on trauma and mental health conditions. All of which were exacerbated when fuelled by sex, drugs, rock and roll.
They are now 1 month into Sobriety at the time of creating Creativity Hertz. Yes, early on you might say, but they are determined and driven by their own desire to be the best version of themselves for their kids, their friends and their family.
January 2026 was a roller coaster of emotions, detox symptoms and self education to adjust to the world around them sober. Joey’s brain was on fire, their heart was pumping from the moment they opened their eyes at 5am every morning and they didn't stop until they slept. Each day spent building the foundation on which Creativity Hertz has been constructed.
